You should have known that you would have to go through customs in chicago. That's staple international travel knowledge.

I'm tempted to have my big travel backpack as a carry on when I fly back. I check it for international travel because I know the US doesn't allow liquids, and my luggage has liquids. I'm not sure about Japan though, I'll have to look that up.

I heard, that some people (esp. older I guess) have a mental block against gaijin speaking japanese. It was in a book for a japanese culture class, and the author detailed how he would be talking to people and all they'd say is that they didn't know english.
